Malaysia moves closer

Malaysia beat China 3-0 in the final group World Cup 2010 qualifier match in Invercagill on Saturday, setting up a clash with host New Zealand for a slot to the finals.

China which only needed a draw to progress went behind when Kevinder Singh scored for Malaysia in the 37th min, the International Hockey Federation said on its website www.fihockey.org. Malaysia plays New Zealand today.

Malaysia's second goal arrived only one minute later when Tengku Ahmad Tajuddin Tengku Abdul Jalil scored with a shot from outside the D.

China which which retaliated with several raids found Malaysian goalkeeper S.Kumar in his element.

It instead conceded a third goal when Nabil Fiqri Mohd Noor finished a cross by Kevinder Singh in the 51st min.

The win put Malaysia on 10 points, second behind New Zealand which collected 15 points which emerged group champion.

In another group match, New Zealand beat Austria 4-0 to win all five group matches.

Only the top two teams qualify for the final with the winner qualifying for the World Cup 2010 Finals in India from Feb 28-March 13.

Malaysia beat Wales 2-1, Scotland 3-2, drew with Austria 2-2 and lost to New Zealand 2-4 in the group stage.
