Confidence-eroding defeat

The Malaysian U-23s, who are preparing for next month’s SEA Games, suffered a confidence-eroding 1-0 defeat to Maldives at the UITM Stadium on Thursday.

K Rajagobal’s men could do nothing right in the friendly and the only goal of the match was scored from the spot by Ali Ashfaq.

According to media reports, the furious coach changed the entire squad for the second half but to little avail. A foul by Md Faisal Muhammad saw Maldives being awarded a penalty that was duly dispatched by Ashfaq past goalie Syed Adney.

Rajagobal resorted to more changes in an attempt to bring up the equaliser but his efforts proved in vain as the Malaysians failed to find the net in the face of stubborn resistance from the Maldivians.

The two clash again on Sunday before Maldives, who are the SAFF champions, depart for Dhaka for the South Asian showpiece, which runs through December 4-14. - AFC.
