Merdeka day jottings

On Monday we would be celebrating our 52nd Merdeka day and we have many reasons to be excited about it. In many areas the future looks good for our nation. Anyway, I just want to write something about sports.

During events like this one would obviously like to take a look at the past and try to hope for a better future. For sports to have a wonderful future, we have to take a hard look at some current issues and find solutions.

To find solutions, we need people capable of doing that, and for now, probably that would be an important matter to attend to. I believe we have enough "evidence" that show us there are big problems in sport but we do not have a method or people to solve it. To add to this, we have a culture of not disturbing the status quo.

Local badminton hero Dato' Lee Chong Wei lost in the World Championship held in Hyderabad, India recently. Many asked me how can some one who loses all the important events, but wins all the smaller ones continue to be number one ranked in the world.

Well, in badminton its actually a game of calculation, numbers and, of course, money. To be number one, a player has to win the most number of tournaments.

Therefore it does not matter if one wins Macau Open and all the lesser opens in the circuit and fails at World Championship, Olympic and All England. All he has to do it to make sure he gets into the quaterfinals of the major events to have the points needed.

The likes of Lin Dan (China) and Taufik Hidayat can be World, Olympic and All England champions but Chong Wei, who is sent to almost all the tournaments, will be world number one.
That is how the system works.

But why would any player be smilling even he loses the main events but holds on to the number one ranking? Well thanks to Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) he will smile all the way to the bank.

According to the rewards system in BAM, a player who maintains his world ranking will receive Rm45,000 every three months. Just be number one and be happy. So, it looks like an insentive to be number one, not to win big events like the World Championship.

Are you surprised? Well what do you expect from an organization that hires local players without proper qualification (certificates and so on) as coaches? Ex-starts like Datuk Misbun Sidek and his brother Rashid can be used effectively in other areas such as at grassroots, schools and districts.

Recently, some worries were expressed as to the state of squash in the country with no apparent talent that could take over from the likes of Dato' Nicol Ann David. Some even warned the Squash Rackets Association of Malaysia (SRAM) to learn from the Singapore experience.

Many parents are complaning that council member's children are given priority and their sons and daughters left out. Some are planning to leave the sport. I just hope that Dato' A. Sani
Karim and the other businessmen in SRAM are aware of this problem.

Sani is a leader who expects perfection. In sports we need passion as well. While credit should be given to Sani for making the management more effective but, now more than ever, squash needs a passionate and hands-on person to take a deep look at the needs at schools, district and state level.

In football, for some time now critics have asked Sultan Ahmad Shah to step down as Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) President . There are those who blame Tuanku for the state of football in the country. Since no one has suggested who the replacement should be, I would not touch on that issue - for now.

But my "Merdeka wish" for FAM is - please get a foreign coach for the national team and another foreigner to be the Director of Coaching to oversee the other national age group teams.

FAM cannot select national coaches based on performances in the local league. This is because the standard is far different and many of the coaches lack proper international exposure.

FAM was upset when former national coach, B. Sathianathan criticised the standard of our league. Actually, in a way, he was right. The junior teams also need to be supervised by foreign experts so that when the move up to the senior team, they are matured players.

The Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM), as usual, puts up a all-is-well front and gives statements about Laos and other places. But, until now OCM cannot have its sub committees functioning although it three months and three board meetings have passed since the last AGM.

A new ruling requires all those interested to serve in committees to apply, and if approved, they will be put into a committee. Every one knows that this is a move to keep people like M.P. Haridas and Latifah Tan Sri Yaakob from being involved in any way.

Haridas has already applied. We will wait and see if he is selected.

This is happening in an organization that is supposed to spread the core values of Olympism. One of the core values is RESPECT. What kind of respect is this?

Many expected Tengku Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah to make drastic changes when he took over as the President of Malaysia Hockey Federation (MHF). I believe Tuanku did not act fast enough to make changes and now the situation looks bad.

But, it is not too late. Tuanku can still remove the trouble makers and bring in passionate and experienced people to help in improving the image of hockey.

What can we do to improve sports in Malaysia? Well maybe its time for a Sports Commission to be responsible for the management of sports. This commission, probably under the PM himself, will have the powers to tackle all problems and bring the focus of the National association to doing what they are supposed to do in the first place - developing sport.

For so long some sports bodies are hiding behind some international provision that prevent any form of intervention in their affairs. I believe thiese rules are to protect sports from being manipulated for political gains, not to keep rotten officials in office.

Well, will we are celebrating our Independence anniversary day lets also give some thoughts as to how we can move on.

  1. Dear Mr. Marcose,

I enjoy your writings but today I have to disagree with you on the squash matters.

    1. I have many times said that Nicol is a rare find, meaning that if she was not in squash she would still be world class in any of the other sport. There will never be a replacement for her. However, I agree that we are struggling to find world class players.

    2. When Malaysian Squash started their junior development program on a big scale, it was during the time of the SUKOM 98 program. Those times the number of players were fewer, much fewer than now with about the same amount of money available. As such, players like Beng Hee, Nicol and an extend Azlan got about 5-8 junior and professional tournaments abroad. That is on top of all the local tournaments that we still have at the moment. We don't have that luxury at the moment. Give us the money hockey, badminton and football have been spending and I am sure we can get back on track.

    3. Parents will of course say their kid being overlooked. If they believe that their kids are that good, do what KH Ong has done. He send Beng Hee with his own money overseas during the initial years of Beng Hee's junior days. I have thrown that to them but none of them has taken that challenge. The recent case of the boy from Melaka is an isolated case. Appreciate the effort of the parents but the Japan Junior Open is not a strong tournament, in fact it is even weaker than our local under-9 tournaments.

    4. All that said, I also agree that the administration and development of squash in Malaysia needs a look at and improved BIG time. Schools have always been difficult due to the high cost of the sports and bureaucracy. Coaching and coaches that are involved also need a BIG review.

Keep up the good work and hopefully my insight has help you develop a better picture of the deficiencies of the sport.

  2. Joe, the problem with sports in this country is the presence of people with vested interests who place their interests ahead of other things and others...apa mau buat...

  3. Good on you Joe, for having the guts to write about what no one will write.
For sports lovers, the umbrella body for sports is supposedly to be Olympic Council Of Malaysia. If the Board of OCM is not practising what the IOC guideline on sports for all, whatever is taught in the Olympic Academy, etc. than they might as well resign and allow others to run it. Why do they want to stay on? is it because they are doing it for their own personnal glory and gains? With the exception of a couple of members, the rest should get out. The Sec.Gen is the first that should resign followe by Roy Rajasingam. These two are the schemers to ensure that Mr. Haridas and Puan Latifah does not sit in any of the committees by the introduction of applications forms
Chairman of committees can arrange to put in names but it has to be approved by the management committee headed by none other than Roy. So, in reality, the committee members will be people that SG and Roy can manipulate and the com. chairmans has no say in the selection. Whoa!!! We are a democratic country and what they need are VOLUNTEERS who are willing to give their time and effort (pardon my expression, not the Sec Gen type !!! Another story)

  4. Hope that whatever is written will open up eyes of the hard core of sports and its about time the unwanted be removed and the hardworking volunteers be brought in. People around knows what is really going on especially in OCM but none has dared to open up to tell. Do have some respect for good people and have noted the names of Haridas and Latifah is defintely on the SEC. Gen.'s hate list. After all they were in OCM and am sure they knew what was going on bad or good. Mr. President - Do what is necessary to upgrade the going ons in OCM and not be a bull that is pulled by the nose as you should know that OCM is the mother to all Sports Association and what the mother does is what the childrn will follow.

  5. Fellow Malaysians,
It's National day. Be kind to the OCM Board members who have been elected to serve voluntarily. Some comments were uncharitable and it's shameful these appeared in a SHEPHERD's blog. Joe, you should know that some of the comments were dirt that come out from people with BAD HEART. Some comments were totally distorted. Let's be fair and not tell LIES especially during this month of Ramadan.

  6. Right on oldie. This blog will write the truth and we all know the truth hurts.

  7. I would like to see OCM practices what they (IOC) preaches...Fairplay, Friendship and Peace...or in OCM's terms Hit below the Belt, Hatefulness or create Enemies and War.

OCM have volunteers? My foot...OCM foot their bills and pay their perks and you say they are volunteers... until the day the office bearers pay for their own passages and remove their perks perhaps then they will be real volunteers until then they are paid volunteers.

  8. Uncle Joe, Some of the remarks made against the Board of OCM is very unkind. But then thinking about it, there is alot of truth in it. Dato SKC the Sec Gen is a nice chap, but don't you ever mess with him. In OCM there are no greater GOD than him.

To be on his good book , is not expensive all you need to do is belanja him a bit and tell him what a fantastic Sec Gen he is and youget in his good books. OCM he often quote is an apolitical NGO. No one can tell them what to do. This is their problem, no one can control them. Not the Sports Commissioner not the Minister.

If you were to look at the picture objectively OCM makes their own rules as it goes along. Sad isn;t it?

  9. anon 11.42, the reason for letting the wrtiters write what they write is becausen they do know what is going on in OCM. What makes you think that they got the votes in an honest way. After all a lot of things happened just before the AGM that outsiders do not know of. All the lying and hitting opponents below the belt and offending the status of sports officials is te SG's favurite past time. Until it hits you yourself than only you will know how it feels. So do try to understand the situation fisrst before making your comments. There is nothing about races or religion as sports athletes and sports ooficial have always been practising 1 Malaysia before it was even thought of as we live in a multiracial country and we sports people have always respected others' beliefs

  10. Bang Rizal, Certaily we can do something. In your Blog and Uncle Joe's Blog we can reveal what is happening in OCM. Are our comments really unfair. The nonsense that has been going on in OCM, the attack on Latififah and Haridass are all well documented. These are facts.

The payment of RM 4K and 6 K to Associate and ordinary member of NSA just before the OCM AGM election are all true. Some may call it corruption.

DSKC going around telling people he does not draw a salary are all true BUT he does not tell the world the perks he gets in OCM. Look we do not mind, but do your job according to your charter. But what I feel we need to ask is what ails OCM?

My answer is there is no one that can control OCM, there is no one can tell OCM, hey chaps I think you are wrong in this. Look there have 2 lawyers in their Board Low Beng Choo and Roy Rajasigham. None of them dare to come out to tell Dato Sieh that he is wrong, they have breached the Sports Development Act , he has not followed their own constitution. The sad part is Tunku the President is a nice guy and does not or cannot chastise or control him.

Bang Rizal, who do we blame? Uncle Joe has the guts to write about it. Invite the Sports Body to speak up and I am sure there are many who dare to speak to you on condition of annonymity.

Unle Joe and Bang Rizal, for the love of Malaysian sports we have to correct the nonsense in OCM.

I feel ashame that I have to sign in as ANON, but if I don't and DSKC knows me, my sports is a dead duck, kena boycott and no funding.

  11. Uncle Joe,

Notice is you will the main stream press also dare not write anything ill of OCM. The Sports Editors are scared and why? You mean to tell me they do not know what is happening in OCM and what Dato Sieh is doing? Do you know why they dare not expose the scam in OCM?

Like every athletes, OCM issue the accreditation or the Press clearance for the reporters. You write bad stuff against us and we make sure you don't go to the Games. That is how powerful DSKC and OCM are today.

Ask the Star and The Malay Mail Dports Editors, better still ask Rizal Hashim.

Really DSKC talks about 1 Malaysia, that is a good concept but to really solves the rot in OCM, we may start with a Key Performance Index for OCM. Let us analyse the effectiveness of OCM. Open a discussion on it.

If you were to ask me, I will rate OCM only 2 points out of 10. Seriously Uncle Joe, look at OCM onjectively, they are actually a Secretariat to coordinates athletes going for the Games. Ther are suppose to act as a vetting body to ensure that the athletes does not make a mockery in the Sporting event they particiapte in.

Under Section 9 of the Sports Development Act, they are just another Sports Body. Is OCM just a sports body and bound by the Act. The answer is no, they are a Super Sports body and they dare to infringe the Act. They can claim diplomatic immunity under the guise that they are an NGO and the act based of the Olympian Spirit. Now you know why even Sports Commissioner dare not touch OCM

  12. Anon 10:05 I think its not anon 11.42 but more of anon 9.49...more so anon 9.49 its callous to ask the truth to be silence is like saying you can live in a lie and the truth doesnt matter to you. If that's the case, you are all bullshiters and liars.

Joe, I don't think Haridas would be selected to be in any committee. How sad for the sports fraternity. Real volunteers are out but scavengers are in.

  13. Uncle Joe and Bang Rizal, Lately Sports Commissioner 's office has send out a circular to update their data on Sports bodies at Federation level. All 126 bodies including Persatuan Scrabble Malaysia have been asked whether the committee recived a salary or allowance.

Incidentally top on this list is Majilis Olympik Malaysia. It would be interesting if what DSKC, Tunku and the rest in the Board can revel how much they are paid (including the perks)by wau of allowance to travel on Malaysian public expenses.

Maybe you should investigate this.If it is revealed truthfully , there is a scandal brewing and must be exposed.

  15. aybe the President MHF did not move fast enough, but his recent appointment o Mike as GM is I believe a great step in the right direction.

A Sports Science graduate with an MBA, Mike I believe is also a qualified coach. He is an Olympian and an ex national skipper. He is still active as a player at club and league levels. He was noted as a player with great discipline, commitment and passion for the game. He is a natural leader and team player. I believe he will bring these same qualities to his job in MHF.

The President MHF must now see how he can get a couple of more young people with the same energy, enthusiasm, passion and background to serve on the MHF Ex-Co.

The strength of the MHF is dependent very much on the strength of its affiliates. Today most affiliates do not have their own leagues, do not organise any competition, have no development programs and sometimes participate in national competitions with very little or no training. I hope the President will also look at the state of affairs in the states.

    All the best MHF.
